  EP Cares
EP CARES seeks to be a leader in promoting environmental conservation and sustainability in New York City. We strive to educate and empower young students, form direct volunteer-based engagement with the NYC community, and mobilize other engineering firms to commit to similar methods of corporate social responsibility.

EP Cheers on the NY Mets!
This month, the EP team headed to Flushing, Queens to visit Citi Field and watch the New York Mets take on the Oakland Athletics. On a very warm summer evening, we enjoyed the game from a private suite which included great food and an even better view of the field. It was a perfect summer outing for the group, watching an exciting game and cheering for the home team.

The Bowery Mission
Homelessness is an on-going and prevalent issue, especially in a city as large as New York. Many individuals are unsure where to find any kind of assistance, let alone their next meal. The Bowery Mission was founded in 1879 for this very purpose, and has been providing aid to hungry and homeless New Yorkers ever since. The organization strives to provide compassionate care to men, women and children in need and relies on volunteers to help their fellow New Yorkers.

Stress is your body’s way of protecting you when you feel any kind of demand or threat. When this response is working properly, it’s meant to help keep you calm and focused. We all live busy lives and have a number of factors that can cause us to feel stressed. For instance, our demanding schedules can make us feel overwhelmed and anxious. Stress can affect the body in many ways when not handled properly.
Team Building with Pizza!
Team Building with Pizza!
This month EP had the pleasure of taking part in a Team Building Pizza Making Class at Ribalta on 12th Street, NYC. As a group, under the instruction of Master Pizzaiolo Pasquale Cozzolino, we learned how to prepare and stretch pizza dough like a pro. We were also educated on how to pick the proper ingredients and toppings to make the perfect pizza at home.

What is EP Cares?
What is EP Cares?
In 2016 we launched the EP CARES initiative, focusing on outreach to local communities and schools to educate children and adults about the importance of energy usage and sustainability. 2017 will be no different as EP CARES continues to grow and is currently developing a campaign to merge with other design firms and leverage the power of the sustainability movement.

THREE 3s Pledge
In January we launched our THREE 3s initiative which established aggressive outreach goals for EP Engineering to reach in the 2016 calendar year. Our hope was to use our leverage as a small business to give back to the community and to the environment. We also wanted to provide our employees a chance to be a part of something important that was more than just a job.
Here is how we did...

Grounds to Grow On
NJIT Solar Decathlon China 2017
EP Engineering is volunteering time to assist the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) students that are participating in the 2017 Solar Decathlon China competition. The project was formed through a memorandum of understanding among the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Energy Administration of the People's Republic of China, and the China Overseas Development Association.

Help Keep New York Clean
Helping Keep New York Clean
EP Engineering has joined with The Eco-Group of New York to recycle our engineering drawings and plans. The Eco-Group of New York is on a mission to provide companies like ours a FREE alternative to recycle old outdated or unwanted drawings. They are a sponsor of the Urban Green Council and support their quest to reduce the emission of toxic greenhouse gases through recycling.

Grounds to Grow On
Barbeque & Field Day for At-Risk Youth
EP Engineering joined with The Volunteers of America to host their annual Barbecue and Field Day on July 28th in Liberty State Park. The youth who benefit from this program are in transition or crisis and live in group homes, short-term emergency shelters, or supportive housing programs for youth aging out of foster care. The VOA provides assistance, specialized programs and consulting in areas to help set forth a foundation for a successful future for these at-risk teenagers.

Electronics and Battery Recycling –The Big Green Box
EP has implemented another recycling program in the office, the recycling of disposable batteries! Thousands of disposable batteries are throw away daily and filling our landfills. Did you know that due to the contents, batteries should be disposed of separately from your everyday trash? Batteries contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals. When disposed of improperly, these harmful contents are polluting and contaminating the environment.

Grounds to Grow On
Grounds to Grow On
EP Engineering has incorporated The Grounds to Grow On program into our everyday office sustainability practices. The Grounds to Grow On program converts brewed K-Cup packs into useable alternatives. While they continue to research and develop other earth friendly packaging solutions for the K-Cup pack, the recovery program provides an alternative method of disposal, outside of the landfill.
EP skips lunch to fight hunger
City Harvest pioneered food rescue in 1982, and, this year, will collect 55 million pounds of good food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it to soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs that help feed the nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables.

EP Cares gives back to our furry friends
EP Cares is always looking to give back to the community and our next effort was to help out our 4 legged friends at a local animal shelter. During the last month, the EP Team collected items such as cleaning supplies, leashes, and gently used towels, blankets and sheets to donate. Bideawee relies on donations from the community to ensure the best care for the animals and there are many ways you can donate.

EP runs NYC Half Marathon with ACS for Cancer Fundraising
March 15, 2015 EP runs NYC Half Marathon with ACS for Cancer Fundraising On March 20th, 2016, more than 20,000 runners from all walks of life took the streets of Manhattan to run the NYC Half Marathon. The temperature at the start of the race was in the low 30s but the warmth in the crowd was immeasurable.

Find out how we have adopted a policy of ZERO WASTE
ZERO WASTE is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The process recommended is one similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. EP recognizes that recycling saves resources, prevents pollution, supports public health, and creates jobs. This saves money, avoids landfills, and best of all, it’s easy.

Where is the EP Cares Bear?
At EP Engineering we try to do our part by actively making choices in our office which will have a positive impact on the environment. That’s why we have made the switch from traditional paper products to plant based products, specifically Bagasse. What is Bagasse? Bagasse is a natural byproduct of sugarcane refinement. Bagasse is the fiber that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice.

Rwanda Flour Processing Plant with EWB
EP has teamed up again with Engineers Without Borders, this time to help design a new flour processing plant in Rwanda.

The initial assessment phase is underway and EP is working with other volunteers, specifically in mentoring junior engineers with the ventilation & MEP infrastructure related to the plant. An assessment trip is scheduled for this coming winter.
EP Composts
The EP office composts food scraps and other organic wastes in lieu of disposing in the general trash.
Why you may ask?
EP has recognized that composting provides a partial solution to an issue of great concern in many communities. All around the country, landfills are filling up, garbage incineration is becoming increasingly unpopular, and other waste disposal options are becoming ever harder to find.

Where is the bear?
For the remainder of the summer be on the lookout for the EP CARES Bear.

He will be out and about travelling this great city, promoting environmental and sustainability awareness. We will post his whereabouts to our Facebook, Linked In and Twitter pages each week. Can you guess where the EP CARES Bear is this week?.
Eleanor Roosevelt High School Energy Audit
EP Cares continued it’s commitment to educating students about energy & sustainability with a visit to Eleanor Roosevelt High School on Thursday, May 14th. EP president, Evan Parganos, conducted a presentation to the students in the Art & Environment class, taught by Niki Lederer.

EP fights back against colon cancer at the 2015 5k Colon Run!
Some people run for health and fitness. Many run for charity. EP Engineering’s Alex Piatek joined hundreds of runners from around the country and ran to honor someone near and dear to his heart. He led his team “The Mamas and the Opas” in the 12th annual 5k Colon Run held at Citi Field on March 22, 2015.
The Mamas & the Opas raised over $2,300 for cancer awareness and research.

EP runs NYC Half Marathon with ACS for Cancer Fundraising
On March 15, 2015 nearly 20,000 runners from all over the world took the streets of Manhattan to run the NYC Half Marathon. Included in that group was EP President, Evan Parganos, running for Team Determination (American Cancer Society).
The Determination team raised over $235,000 for cancer awareness and research (and still counting!). Along with other charities, the race in total raised several millions!

Nicholas Pierce Memorial Golf Outing
EP Engineering had the honor of participating in the Nicholas Pierce Memorial Golf outing and fundraiser on October 23rd, at the Cranbury Golf Club. Proceeds from the event went towards the Flatbush YMCA, to assist with development programs for youth in that area. Aside from raising money for a good cause, the event allowed for our team to bond over some questionable but nonetheless fun golf play!
