Summit on Hudson Award Winning Affordable Housing Development

Westhab is a nonprofit organization that is focused on creating affordable housing and community development opportunities in Westchester County. Offering variety of programs, Westhab works to improve the lives of residents by providing resources for stable housing, job training, and personal growth.

A winner of NYSERDA’s renowned ‘Buildings of Excellence’ award, Summit on Hudson is an all-electric and sustainably built affordable residential building that offers supportive services for its tenants. The six-story building is approximately 113,000 square feet and is composed of 113 residential units, community/recreation rooms, supportive offices, an on-site laundry facility, an outdoor plaza, and a parking garage equipped with EV chargers. 45 of the residential units will be occupied by formerly homeless tenants.

In addition to the various services and amenities available at Summit on Hudson, a museum-like exhibit has been installed. The exhibit includes video interviews of the design/construction team by local high school students and features displays with various construction system details encapsulated with descriptions for the viewer to visualize and understand some of the sustainable and renewable features of the building.

Working alongside Westhab and Amie Gross Architects, EP Engineering proudly provided full Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Sprinkler and Fire Alarm engineering services for this community staple at Summit on Hudson.

Engineering outcomes

  • Design of a Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) plant to provide hot water for the entire building. HPHW utilizes heat pump technology to provide a highly energy efficient solution for domestic hot water production.
  • Close coordination with the truss manufacturer and architect to achieve super-tight coordination of horizontal ductwork through a wooden truss system.
  • Implementation of a Drain Water Heat Recovery system on domestic sanitary piping mains which transfers outgoing waste heat to the cold-water supply for showers in each apartment which supports reduced hot water consumption on low flow plumbing fixtures.
