ARCS (Auxiliary Radio Communication System)

New York City skyline

EP Engineering is here to assist in designing the necessary ARCS for any high-rise building. Auxiliary Radio Communication System (ARCS) is required in all newly constructed NYC high-rise buildings (i.e. buildings with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet above the lowest level of FDNY vehicle access). ARCS is a wireless two-way communication system for FDNY use only. It operates on an exclusive FDNY frequency, which prevents interference and allows for reliable communication during an emergency response. A typical ARCS installation will consist of the following:

  • Base Station
  • Dedicated Radio Console
  • Antennas (Located throughout the building)
  • 2-hour rated ARCS cabling
  • Backup Power (via Generator/ATS, Battery)

The ARCS installation has to be commissioned by a person holding a Federal Communications Commission general radiotelephone operator license. The system will need to be tested and supervised by a Certificate of Fitness holder (a person holding a Fire Department license). Additionally, the ARCS will require daily inspections, annual certification, and five-year recertification.
