Engineering challenges

  • Design HVAC system to meet the specific pressure, temperature, and humidity requirements for Class B Operating Rooms
  • Provided a separate dry Fire Sprinkler System to serve the unoccupied attic space, in addition to the wet system serving the ground floor and cellar.

Engineering outcomes

  • Provided a 3-branch Essential Electrical System (EES) to comply with Article 517 of the NEC. The system consists of a diesel-powered emergency generator, an automatic transfer switch, and a panel for each branch: life safety, critical and equipment. We were able to design the system to keep the total EES loads under 150 kVA so three separate transfer switches were not required, allowing the client substantial savings on equipment and installation costs.
  • Coordinated with the contractor to determine the shortest water heater direct-vent path to minimize cost, while maintaining code required clearances to windows and doors.
