Cyprus recently launched an initiative to increase their use of renewable energy in an effort to keep up with the rest of the European Union. Our client, Phileleftheros, one of the largest media companies in Greece and Cyprus, wanted to emerge on the forefront of this initiative and sought to develop a groundbreaking building that defined the country’s movement in the direction of sustainable construction. The building will be approximately 100,000 square feet and will be used for office spaces and other corporate functions.

Engineering challenges
Our client wanted to set a precedent for technologies not frequently used in this country. Our team was required to research all codes, government incentive programs and energy profiles for a foreign location and become familiar with the European sustainability certification program, BREEAM (similar to USGBC LEED program).
Engineering outcomes
We developed various sustainability schemes with aggressive paybacks, including but not limited to, cogeneration, photovoltaic power, solar panel heating and cooling, gray water systems, exhaust heat energy recovery and absorption chilling. In addition, our team developed schemes for the building to achieve various BREEAM certification levels.
